2023 Dodge Hornet R/T PHEV: An Electrified Performance Beast in the CUV Segment

With the introduction of the 2023 Dodge Hornet, the automaker boldly expands its foothold in the CUV segment. The Hornet R/T, Dodge’s first electrified performance vehicle, features the brand's unique new PowerShot horsepower boost, promising the most potent standard performance in this class.

The Hornet R/T PHEV is equipped with a multi-energy powertrain that combines a 1.3-litre turbocharged all-aluminum engine, part of the Stellantis Global Small Engine (GSE) family, with a 90-kW electric induction motor. The advanced system provides over 285 horsepower and 383 lb.-ft. of torque, topping the segment. The GSE engine incorporates third-generation MultiAir technology, which enhances combustion efficiency by adjusting valve lift and timing.

Furthermore, the vehicle offers an estimated 50 kilometres of pure electric driving range. It's powered by a 15.5-kWh lithium-ion battery, kept at optimum temperature by a refrigerant gas cooling circuit. The R/T PHEV system ensures dynamic response and efficient battery recharging with a starter generator, high-power inverter, and a 7.4-kW charging module, allowing for a full battery charge in around 2.5 hours on a Level 2 charger. This advanced system pairs with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Drivers of the Hornet R/T PHEV can take advantage of a dedicated Sport Mode, providing enhanced throttle response, optimized shift schedule, and increased power and torque from the hybrid system, along with a tighter steering wheel feel. This mode is conveniently accessible via a button on the centre console.

The Hornet R/T PHEV also brings an exclusive PowerShot feature to the table, adding a jolt of 25 horsepower and instant torque, hence significantly reducing the vehicle's 0-60 mph acceleration times. PowerShot performance is dependent on battery charge and temperature levels, offering 15 seconds of extra power after a 15-second cooldown period.

Moreover, Dodge offers drivers three selectable hybrid driving modes, tailored to fit various driving needs, operated via a steering wheel-mounted button. These include Hybrid Mode for maximum efficiency, Electric Mode for zero emissions driving, and E-Save Mode to prioritize conventional engine use while preserving or recharging the battery.

Last but not least, the Hornet R/T PHEV employs regenerative braking and an e-Coasting function to recover and store kinetic energy in the battery, contributing to more efficient driving. In essence, the 2023 Dodge Hornet R/T PHEV presents a fusion of high performance and advanced energy efficiency, marking a significant milestone in the brand’s journey towards electrification.
